Feast Day September 8
Frédéric experienced doubts before meeting his wife, Amélie, but that didn’t stop him from becoming a devoted husband and father. Frédéric bought her flowers on the twenty-third of every month to commemorate their anniversary. His daughter, Marie, was the greatest blessing in his life. He also founded the St. Vincent De Paul Society, which serves millions of people.
Small Snippet
Blessed Frédéric, intercede to the Holy Ghost that I may approach everything with a servant mindset, ready to love others through serving with my gifts.
Prayer
Artistic Process
Frédéric was the first saint I created in a new era and style of my work. I call it the Sunnyside Era. He was the first saint I illustrated in pencil, and he roughly resembles where I started. I finissed a little bit here and there. The eyes are smaller, and I went with the more traditional tie, but it was a solid foundation.
Sketch
Illustrated Flowers
I really wanted Frédéric to feel lively, yet also look historically like himself. So I found a middle-ground. Giving him lively modern floral colors, while maintaining the clothing style of his day.
References
Orange Lilies
I felt that orange lilies could best represent his love for his wife. These lilies have a decorative flourishing to them. Something more than your standard lily. I felt this was perfect for the extra love he showed his wife by buying her flowers every month to honor their anniversary.
Apple Blossoms, Buttercups, Baby’s Breath, and Bluebells.
Mandevilla Flower
Since this flower is native to Argentina, it really has nothing to do with a french writer like Frédéric. However, I felt the shape of these flowers, along with the colors truly shine his personality.
Frédéric was a believer in God’s timing. When he prayed before meeting his wife, he prayed for the ability to become the man she deserved. This flowers represent that vulnerability, and self awareness. He wanted Amélie to have the best before he even met her.
