St. Jesús Méndez-Montoya

Musical Martyr 1880 – 1928

Patronage Mexico, Music, Choirs, & Music Ministry

Feast Day May 21

During the Mexican Christian persecution, Fr. Méndez served his people secretly. He taught the faith and music to his village. Music was so important to him that he got a choir together to make the mass celebrations livelier. Eventually he was found by the police. and martyred. They allowed him to consume all the Eucharist hosts before shooting him to death.

Small Snippet

Saint Jesús Méndez, intercede to the Holy Ghost that I may turn to music when I find myself surrounded by darkness. That I may experience the power and beauty of music.

Artistic Process

This face was exactly what I was looking for in the making of Claire.

Inspiration

I drew the bloodshot wounds modeled after this reference.

Blood Shot Wounds

These plants remind me of cactus to some degree, and I know Mexico has native cactus.Maybe not these exact plants, but the colors felt right to evoke his musical life.

Stone Crops

Since he was a martyr, these branches symbolize his faith in the face of death.

Palm Branches

Fr. Mendez-Montoya’s love endured through his death, that his love for his community lasted in beauty as these roses do in death.
