John Paul II believed that the youth are the future of the church. Despite his peers’ doubt that a youth-centered faith event would gain traction, he planned a youth event in the 1980s. Today, this popular weeklong event, called World Youth Day, attracts millions of Catholics worldwide every few years. He also liked to occasionally sneak out of the Vatican to ski.
