Feast Day March 19

Joseph and his pure heart terrorize the devil, and all demons alike. He served Mary and Jesus with every fiber of his being. After living a life in the radiance of Christ, Joseph has exemplified true virtue and love as a man. This powerful love pierces the devil with arrows of pure light. Bl. Bartolo Longo, a former satanist priest, was particularly fond of this title for Joseph and popularized it during the late 20th century.

Saint Joseph, Terror of Demons, intercede to the Holy Ghost that I may persevere in my fight to choose right over wrong, particularly when the wrong thing is enticing and easy.

Artistic Process

Comic book heroes and actual archer references inspired me. I even consulted with an archer I know who guided much of the progress to get the realistic end result.

Archer Inspo

The first thought I had were arrows of light piercing demons. Sketching Joseph was helpful in getting my composition going even if the arrows of light ultimately didn’t make the cut.

Sketch

This painting was created by Hieronymus Bosch in 1495–1505. I took the demons from it, and even turned the fountain from heaven into the tip for the arrows.

The Garden of Earthly Delights

I think I photographed these lilies in a garden in Boston. I can’t quite put my finger on it.

I was so amazed by these clouds while flying home from my good friends’ wedding in Mexico. I simply had to get as many shots as I could.
