Nathaniel was known as Bartholomew in the synoptic gospels, but was only referred to as Nathaniel in John’s gospel account. Nathaniel climbed a tree to when Jesus entered his city, and he fell from it. When Philip introduced him to Jesus, Jesus said, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” Tradition tells he was flayed to death in his martyrdom.
