St. Óscar Romero
Resolute Hero 1917–1980
Patronage El Salvador, Ruffling Feathers, & Persecuted Christians
Feast Day March 24
To the surprise of none of his friends and family, the boy who became Archbishop Romero entered minor seminary at the age of thirteen. He grew to be a diligent, dedicated archbishop who nonetheless wanted to avoid ruffling any feathers, despite political unrest—but the assassination of a personal friend and fellow priest inspired him to instead speak out for social causes. His advocacy ultimately led to his own assassination.
